Waste Audit stats - Jan 2017

This past Tuesday, the Eco Team and Ms Rodgers’ Phys. Ed. class conducted our yearly waste audit. They sifted through an entire day’s garbage to analyse what OTHS throws away. They are dismayed with the stats. 44% of what goes in the garbage could have and should have gone into the recycling bins. 32% of what goes into the garbage could have and should have gone into the compost bins. On a daily basis, 76% of what OTHS students and staff throw in the garbage could have been diverted from the dump. We can do so much better. Please make a renewed effort to place your waste in the proper bins. There are recycling bins everywhere and there are compost bins in the caf, the front lobby, and the back door by the gym. With a little effort, OTHS could reduce our waste by 76%!!! We will conduct another waste audit in May. Let’s see if we can improve these stats by then. Thank you.

The OTHS Fall Events - 2016

The Eco Team held 3 school-wide events in the fall. The first was a Juniors vs Seniors Composting Competition. There were 2 big compost bins set up in the cafeteria (one for 9s and 10s, the other for 11s and 12s). The EcoTeam kept track of how much each grade team composted on a daily basis. The team who composted the most by that Friday was declared the winner and had bragging rights over the other team. The second competition was a Proper Recycling Competition. On Friday November 25th, the Period 3 class that recycled the best (as in, no used Kleenex in the blue bin, no plastic bottles in the garbage) won Timbits! Then, the third special day was a Litterless Lunch. Students who brought in a lunch that produced no garbage received a cookie for their efforts. The Eco Team handed out cookies to eco-friendly students in the cafeteria.
